Bahrain Speed Limits for Trucks, Buses and Other Vehicles

Bahrain sets speed ranges by vehicle type in Article 44 of the Implementing Regulation of the Traffic Law (Law No. 23 of 2014). The current text comes from Ministry of Interior Decision No. 134 of 2017, which replaced the article in full (Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission, English reference text). Trucks, buses and other non-private vehicles get lower limits than private cars:

  • Inside cities (excluding ring roads): a maximum of 30 to 50 km/h for other vehicles, against 40 to 80 km/h for private cars.
  • Outside cities and on ring roads: a maximum of 30 to 80 km/h for other vehicles, against 60 to 120 km/h for private cars.
  • Minimum speeds for other vehicles: 15 km/h inside cities and 30 km/h outside cities and on ring roads.

The limit that applies on a given road is the one shown on its signs, within these ranges. On multi-lane roads the regulation also tells slower vehicles to keep to the right-hand lanes.

The binding text is the Arabic version in the Official Gazette. The English text is published for reference only.

Truck Lane Rules, Peak-Hour Bans and Enforcement

Heavy vehicles in Bahrain face more than a lower speed limit:

  • Right-hand lane: the Ministry of Interior has said existing laws already require trucks to stay in the right-hand lane on main and secondary roads (News of Bahrain, October 2025).
  • Peak-hour bans: trucks are barred from certain roads at peak hours, and the General Directorate of Traffic and road cameras monitor compliance (same source).
  • Causeway restrictions: in January 2026 the General Directorate of Traffic rejected a proposal to add an extra hour to the heavy truck ban on the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Bridge, saying the existing restrictions are adequate (GDN, January 2026).

Lower truck speeds are also on the table. In July 2025 the Muharraq Municipal Council unanimously backed a proposal for reduced speed limits for trucks and heavy vehicles on major roads and referred it to the minister (GDN, July 2025). This is a proposal, not a rule in force.

Why Bahrain Fleets Fit Speed Limiters and GPS Tracking

With trucks capped at 80 km/h on the open road and cameras watching lanes and ban hours, a speed limiter turns the limit into a setting instead of a hope. Fleet owners in Bahrain use them to:

  • Keep heavy vehicles inside the 80 km/h ceiling on ring roads and highways, whatever the driver does with the pedal.
  • Avoid repeat camera fines that build up across a fleet and land on the company.
  • Plan around peak-hour bans with GPS tracking that shows where every truck is and when it entered a restricted road.
  • Cut fuel and maintenance costs by keeping engines out of the high-speed range on short, stop-start island routes.

How to Set Up Speed Limiters for a Bahrain Fleet

  1. List your vehicles by type: private-category vehicles and other vehicles have different limits, so group them first.
  2. Choose a top speed per group: for trucks and buses, set it at or below the 80 km/h maximum for roads outside cities.
  3. Add a second limit if needed: a dual speed limiter can hold a lower speed for city work and a higher one for highways.
  4. Install and road-test: have a qualified installer fit each device, then confirm the limit holds on a test drive.
  5. Watch the data: use GPS reports to spot speeding, lane and ban-hour issues and follow up with drivers.
